Founded in 1949, AFPA is the most important adult education institution in France and is involved daily in building the systems and skills which are necessary for implementing VET policies and programmes. It has carried out VET technical assistance and policy advice at national and regional levels as well as within the framework of international projects.

The Ministry of labour has assigned AFPA the task of designing certification frameworks for more than 300 occupations. AFPA now has more than 150 centres for Adult education and training throughout France.
As a member of the French Public Employment Service, the main mission of AFPA is to help unemployed or working persons acquire or upgrade their qualifications.

The three main activities of AFPA are: adult vocational training, recognition of competences and consultancy services which converge in one objective: qualifying people with different backgrounds to gain access to employment. Its close partnership with professional branches and social partners guarantees training programmes adapted to the needs of the labour market. As such, AFPA designs and implements 350 training programmes leading to qualifications in the construction, industry and services sector.

Furthermore AFPA has developed its own R&D department for education and training techniques, 270 training developers and professional skills experts carry on continuous monitoring of new trends on the job market and update of technical skills requirements.
